I remember some of my first trips to Adepticon, when I would see the painters I admired most bringing their competition pieces with them.

Sometimes they would let me look inside their travel boxes. The miniatures were beautiful and I started noticing how many different ways people had to keep the plinths from moving during the trip.

 

Some used tacky putty. Others used double-sided tape. Some cut foam around the plinth to hold it in place, long screws pushing the plinths towards the corners.

That stayed in my head for a long time.

The plinth itself already has a large unused surface underneath, so I started thinking about a simple way to use that space for transport.

A Plinth Made for Travel Too

The idea was to add a threaded mounting point underneath each plinth.

At home, you can make a hole in a wooden travel board or box and secure the plinth directly to it. The miniature, plinth, and board stay together during transport.

Once you arrive at a competition or show, you remove the plinth from the travel board and place it directly on the display table.

No extra travel part stays attached to the plinth.

It is still just a normal miniature painting plinth.

Four Shapes

We wanted the set to cover the shapes I use most for miniature painting, busts, and display pieces thanks to the @bust Facebook group poll. 

The set includes:

• Cube Plinth — 50 × 50 × 55 mm

• Square Pedestal — 44 × 44 × 70 mm

• Cylindrical Plinth — Ø35 × 55 mm

• Round Pedestal — Ø45 × 50 mm

The Cube and Cylindrical Plinths have simple shapes, while the Square and Round Pedestals have a more traditional stepped base.

Maple Wood

All four plinths are made from maple wood, particle wood was discarded since has a rough surface and tends to absorb more moist.

We chose maple because it is hard, has a fine grain, and gives us a clean surface before painting.

 

Each plinth is finished in matte black. For miniature display the plinth must stay quiet. The miniature should carry the color, contrast, and attention.

The bottom is lined with felt to protect shelves, glass cabinets, competition tables, and other display surfaces.

 

Mounting Miniatures and Busts

Each plinth has a mounting point for attaching the miniature or bust.

The set also includes four black steel rods:

4 mm diameter × 50 mm long

These can be used for busts, raised miniatures, flying models, scenic pieces, or other pin-mounted projects.

The rods are black so they stay visually simple when they are part of the finished display.

Made Around Competition Painting

The goal was simply to take something miniature painters already use and add one practical detail for traveling with finished work.

You can build and paint your miniature using the new FOXBITE Pro Holder, then transfer it directly to the plinth. When it’s time to travel, use the threaded base to secure the plinth to a wooden travel box or tray.
